About Your Bike

Information on reaching and leaving your trip is offered below, trip-by-trip. The linked documents tell you where and when your trip assembles, where and when it disbands, the closest airports, and offer travel hints on connecting these points.

They also detail our “Access Packages.” These are travel packages designed to simplify your travel between your trip and nearby major (airport) cities, or other local attractions. They include trains, sometimes lodging, meals, and especially advice. They offer extra-cost options, including 1st class upgrades, modifiable train tickets, arrival via different cities, and extra hotel nights. If the option you want is not there, ask us about it. We'll help if we can....

They also offer slimmed-down versions for those who prefer to make most or all of their own travel arrangements.

Our packages often offer savings over trying to hunt down the individual services yourself. And they never add more than a few shekels to your overall costs, even if you have the best of luck in setting up your own travel, and hit every possible discount fare. But their real advantage is practical: they offer a “one-stop shop” that can save you considerable research time, and walk you through each of the decisions you have to make in planning your travel.

Pricing of our “Access Packages”

The announced price of each “Access Package” corresponds to the route and timing that most of our guests follow, to or from the nearest major airport city. Your own price will vary with the services you select.

$US and $C prices for the base “Access Package” of a given trip can be consulted on the price chart (“Trip Prices”). The prices that appear in the documents linked from the table below are denominated in €uros. If you are a North American traveller, the $ price (US or C) on your price chart applies until 35 days prior to trip departure. Otherwise €uro prices, which may increase substantially as the travel date draws closer, are transcribed to your account statement in its currency, converted at the exchange rate of the day on which the package is requested (rounded to the nearest whole dollar, pound, or pengo).

Example: to roughly calculate, recently observed exchange rates to 1 € (euro) have oscillated around $1.45 US or Canadian. Current “mid-market” rates can be consulted from the web site we use for conversion. We use the mid-market rate on the day of conversion, and add 2% to cover currency broker exchange commissions (our conversion rates are thus better than any you would obtain, including via your credit card).

Local currency ($US or $C) prices are subject to change, especially with currency fluctuation. Even euro prices are subject to change as suppliers adjust their prices. In particular, “Access Package” prices often rise 35 days in advance. Within 35 days we can still help you reach your trip (there is always a way), but prices may be higher and / or travel options less attractive.

If tickets must be shipped to you prior to your trip, standard shipping charges apply. There is no charge to pick tickets up in one of our offices, or for electronic transmission of “e.tickets” (but which do not exist for most rail journeys).

“Ride the Bike Train” Discounts
Willing to help us with the bikes / equipment? On some routes to and from Paris, special “Ride the Bike Train” discounts are available. Let us pick your route and train, and put a couple of bikes on board with you. You help us by loading and unloading the bikes. In exchange for 15 minutes’ hard work, and your flexible schedule, we give you a price that can’t be beat for the train ride.

Conditions
  • It may or may not be necessary to ride a bike between our Paris office and the station. If you are headed to your trip, any such ride will be accompanied by a Blue Marble guide. If you are returning from the trip, a detailed route description will be provided, using cycle lanes / paths and / or quiet streets (this can actually be a lot of fun). If luggage must be moved simultaneously, we will fund a taxi to do so.
  • “Ride the Bike Train” discounts on trains to the trip are only available to guests who have spent the previous night in Paris, and who have good alarm clocks. The tickets are not refundable or exchangeable, and the reliability of our helpers must be absolute.
  • You rarely travel alone on a cycle train. Often the Trip Coordinator or another Blue Marble employee shares your pain. Even when he isn’t there, we try to put at least two riders aboard each cycle train, so that they can help each other out (one moves the bikes while the other watches the luggage, for instance).
  • There are a limited number of “Ride the Bike Train” discount tickets available per trip: as many as we need to subsidize to get the job done. But if you ask for one, and it’s not available, we’ll tell you, and let you pick a different train if you want to.
  • Your responsibility for the bike(s) in your care is limited to the value of the discount you receive on your travel arrangements.

If this process scares you, it should. NO! What we meant to say is, don’t worry. We explain the trip carefully, everything always goes smoothly.... Kidding aside, we don’t ask you to do anything super-human. After all, they’re our bikes. You are never responsible for more than two, and we are grateful for the help.

How to Read the Access Table (below)

The Access Table lists every trip, with its start and end city. Click on the city name to open the page discussing that city (if there is no link, the package is currently being revised, and will be re-posted soon). This page...

  • ...lists the closest airports to the trip start or end point, and...
  • ...describes your choices for getting to or from the trip.

Puzzle through them (contact us if you need help). Then reply to this questionnaire. Even if you are getting to the trip start point under your own power, we are grateful for that information, as it means we can stop worrying about you.
